One of the anomalies in my mostly-liberal political alignment is my stand on the Second Amendment. I think that the Right to Bear Arms is as important to maintaining our freedoms as any of the others enumerated in the Bill of Rights. This article captures some of that position eloquently.

Hey, we finally have something political to agree on now =)

Unless you count the nutrition of malnurished dragons a political stance!

It is unusual to see someone who leans mostly liberal to come to defense of the 2nd Amendment. I am equally amused to see that the HISTORICAL reasons for the 2nd Amendment show how appropriate it is even in the 21st century, and a good dose of wisdom that this country's fore-fathers had in penning it.

Most people think, or casually "adopt" the notion that "it can't happen here" etc. History can repeat itself if its allowed. People that criticise the 2nd Amendment usually fail to understand *why* it was put there in the first place. Latter day visions of gun toting para-militias notwithstanding, the inherent "right" afforded is paramount to maintaining liberty.

Exactly.

It IS happening here, and it may get worse before it gets better.

Whenever I bring up the idea that the 2d Amendment is there in part so that we can protect ourselves from the government, I frequently get laughed at. After all, the Gummint has a lot MORE guns, and BIGGER guns, and lots of destructive technology that mere citizens could never lay its hands on.

And it's always proved OH SO EFFECTIVE against a guerilla underground, hasn't it?

I support the right to bear arms in general (after all, there are a few floating around the house here somewhere, and when I get out on my own I do plan on purchasing one or two of my own for Just In Case) but the gun nuts still make me sick. An odd dichotomy, I guess, but... Eh. I'm complex that way. Maybe it's that it's a tool that is worth having around, but since its primary function is violence I have a really, REALLY hard time understanding the glorification of it. I guess some might find my fascination with trains as hard to grasp... But at least trains aren't generally designed to kill things.
