So that's it, then.

I downloaded the newest ICQ client, entered the new email address, got the confirmation letter, clicked on the link, got told that yes, I can sign in with my email, and it STILL REFUSES TO SEND A NEW PASSWORD TO THAT SHINY NEW ADDRESS.

This is apparently common enough that they have a canned Frequently Asked Blow You Off:

Please note:  If you are unable to get a new password using the password assistance system, then you will have to register a new ICQ account.

So, kids: no more "Athelind" at ICQ #48745916.

Grr.

And here I thought you were trying to preserve a low, low, low ICQ number. @_@ ICQ 'names' can be replicas of other names, so you won't lose 'Athelind', just the number. Sorry for the inconvenience, though. @_@ I think ICQ is on the way out, anyway.. It seems to exist only for random friend invites trying to pedal porn, these days. >_

Oh, I was trying to preserve the low number... and the long, long contact list.

Yeah, the contact list loss sucks.. They really ought to store it on the server, like AIM.. :P

Yeah, but if they won't let you use your old account number, that still wouldn't matter.

I started using ICQ not too long after it debuted; our squad in SubSpace (one of the original MMOs) used it for out-of-game chatter. My original ICQ# was 295944.

A few years ago, as ICQ numbers were getting up into the nine-digit range, I signed in one day to find my ICQ account had mysteriously vanished. No explanation was ever given. Although I continued to use the service for another year or so, it somehow didn't seem as cool to have that new, longer number. I eventually left ICQ behind completely as AIM and Y!M improved their services, and haven't looked back.

Lovely that they don't have a solution for a common problem. :p

Sure they do! "Suck it up and get a new account."
