In a superhero world, EVERY government organization has a clever acronym. The tax bureau, for example, is the Internal Revenue Investigation Service, or IRIS, and their logo is the All-Seeing Eye on the Great Seal.

Yeah, but some of them can't decide what the acronym stands for. How many different parsings of S.H.I.E.L.D. were there, in the Silver Age alone?

Oh, it was Supreme Headquarters, International Espionage, Law Enforcement Division all through the Silver and Bronze Ages. it wasn't until 1991 that it changed to Strategic Hazard Intervention Espionage Logistics Directorate.

I may have mentioned this before, but in high school, some friends came up with A.C.R.O.N.Y.M. I don't remember what the exact meaning was, but the last two letters were for Yngvie Malmsteen. Sadly, the Man From A.C.R.O.N.Y.M. never made an appearance in our superhero games.

I hate bacronyms. Any bunch of yahoos will come up with something like ABATE or NICE or whatever. It's not the fact they come up with a half-witty backronym that bothers me, it's that insufferable smugness at their imagined cleverness.

Of course that's not as bad as the Kroch Brothers forming another fake public interest group and calling it Citizens for Goodness and Niceness, etc. How could you possibly oppose them? What do you have against Goodness and Niceness?
