Shoe 'nuff

Does anyone know of a good shoe store in the Bay Area?

I'm looking for a store where people who actually know something about shoes and proper fit will sit you down, measure your feet, and go to some effort to find something that fits you. I just hit every single shoe store in the Great Mall, and I am tired of rolling the dice to see if the big-name shoe stores and shoe brands have my size in stock. I wear a 10.5 EXTRA Wide, and I need the podiatric equivalent of a Big and Tall Store.

A Skechers 10.5 Wide fits me perfectly, when they're available, but none of the other brands I tried today fit properly. "Just wear a larger size" turns into a size and a half to two sizes, and I'm sick of having to have my toes flopping around in clown shoes just to get a decent fit across the ball of my feet.

Because getting a decent fit is so hard for me, ordering online is a poor option.

Never been, but Foot Solutions in Fremont (on Mission) is supposed to have shoes in widths, and orthotics and stuff if you need that. Most importantly, it's right by Zorba's Deli, which has the best tuna melt in the universe.

You get a cookie.

There are actually two Foot Solutions in my usual San Jose-Santa Clara stomping grounds.

I stopped in at one, got my feet measured and a VERY thorough diagnosis of all my pedal peculiarities, and then a quiet recommendation to go to REI if I was looking for hiking boots.

(Evidently, I actually wear an 11 2E, and my toes are a size 9 on one foot and a size 10 on the other. I also have some kind of rotational weirdness.)

REI was right across the street; I'd actually hit them last week, but they were insanely crowded and nobody in sight. That seems to be the exception, rather than the rule; today I was helped immediately, got a good run-down of what was available, and the first pair of shoes made my feet feel like they were wrapped up in pure happiness.

I also picked up a pair of Vibram Five Fingers, which I'm about to try out on an actual walk.

I obviously can't help with the shoe store, but I can sympathize with the hard to fit feet. :)

The one store that kept coming up in Google searches was Dorene's, where we took you a few years ago before FC, but, alas, they only carry women's shoes.

Dorene's is well positioned for Google searches, it's how I found them. :) I'm glad to see you found a good store or two.

Let me know if you want to cruise by there again when you're in town for FC next January; we can make arrangements.

I go to Shoe Mill. I don't know if they have them there but they got me hooked up with GREAT shoes. I am diabetic and have wide feet and high arches. Ugh!
