Couldn't leave a comment at KDDR(the image verification thing wasn't working), so I'll just do so here.

Preeeeetty much completely agreed on all counts, but we've talked over all this before anyway. The point that sticks out to me the most of course is the line about new writers being hesitent to throw new antagonists in, as if they think every villian needs to be a recurring one.

So along that note and out of curiosity, who/what were the most recent original Bat-villians?

Well, if you leave out Grant Morrison's work on "Batman R.I.P." and the Batman and Robin series, which are deliberate moves to recapture the good parts of the Silver Age without abandoning modern, sophisticated storytelling, the last significant Bat-Villain I can think of is Hush, from 2002-2003. Before Hush, I think you have to go all the way back to Bane, introduced in 1993.

The problem with that, unfortunately, is that "significant Bat-Villain" in this context means "character with a lasting impact on the mythos", and that, in turn, suggests "recurring character". On the other claw, I don't think the Bat-Books have been brimming with One-Shot Wonders in the intervening time; my impression is that we've had The Usual Suspects, Over and Over.

Even if that's not... okay, I love Man-Bat. You know it, I know it, everyone knows it.
