You know, the more I watch other people play video and computer games, and the more I see the intricate graphics, the game play, the action...

...the more pointless, repetitive and tedious they look.

Strange, that, isn't it?

But when you're actually playing those games, when you are hooked, they can be fascinating and addictive.

Video games are a solitary medium. Watching someone play a game means you're watching the video output on the monitor, and when you're not controlling the character it's just a stupid looking movie where the shot never changes and you're watching someone perform repetitive tasks. But when you ARE controlling the character, the experience is fundamentally different. The repetition serves to reinforce the experience rather than to detract from it.

As for the repetitive tedium while playing, yes, I will grant you many games are that way.

I don't LIKE repetitive tasks. Doing the same thing over and over and over is just boring and frustrating. For me, it's even WORSE when I'm doing it.

I don't hypnotize well, either.

In a way. There are exceptions to the rule, but then again, there's only so much you can do with a couple controller sticks and twelve buttons. Then again, that's part of why I'm not much of a gamer. Sure, I've got a PS2 but the number of games I've gotten for it in nearly two years of ownership has only recently exceeded one hand's worth of fingercounting. None of them are FPS games or the like- to me those have always been the most repetetive. Even back when I did the Pee Cee thing I rarely did those- most of my gaming was in General Aviation/ATP flight sims. Flew Tokyo-L.A. in real time once. That was interesting. }:>

I think you'd like Fire Emblem for the GBA. It's more like a classic CRT-based wargame, and each battle has at least one new wrinkle. Of course, I'm near the end, and the wrinkle of the latest battle is "bad guy reinforcements arrive every freakin' turn." Aieee!

Ironically, my complaint about Prince of Persia: Sands of Time is that it's not more repetitive. :^) You might also wanna give Mark of Kri and Silent Hill 2 a toss.
