Electronic Voting Catastrophe.

Looks like it doesn't matter who runs against Dubya. The plutocrats have gained complete control of the electoral process.

[livejournal.com profile] araquan won't be surprised by this -- he's been keeping me appraised of the Diebold Debacle since the 2000 election.

All is not lost, however. Ever since that extremely dumb announcement by the Diebold CEO -- that he was guaranteeding the delivery of Ohio's electoral votes to George W. Bush -- there's been a firestorm over here.

Ohio is a swing state. Bush won it in 2000, and they'd LOVE to get their hands on it again in 2004.

However, all is not lost. Some of the newest models of EVMs -- NOT made by Diebold, I might add -- actually *DO* leave a paper trail, by printing votes on thermal paper. The voter confirms that the votes he/she made are the votes recorded, and then the paper is turned over to the polling place, which keeps it under lock and key. If there is ANY question, the papers in the lockboxes are taken out and counted. NPR had a section of All Things Considered about it not long ago.

Guarantee that with the amount of noise that's been made thus far, there's going to be alot of pressure to adopt electronic machines with a paper trail. And Diebold's fighting for it's life to get the EVM contract here in Ohio -- before that public comment about Bush, they had the inside track.
