The Day of the Locust, by Mike Davis.

I wish I'd been able to find a neat, succinct summary of the issues and misconceptions behind the recent abortion of democracy recall here in California before Tuesday.

Geez, you'd think that the Total Recall election of Ar-nuld to Colliephonia was the apocalypse.

Take some comfort in the fact that his election puts Bush in a double bind. Either he has to embrace a man that conservatives have not hestitated to brand as a RINO (Republican in Name Only) or he distances himself and loses California almost by default. Voters there are ANGRY, yes...and voter anger never translates into anything good for incumbents.

Even if he does embrace Schwarzenegger -- which actually might be good for California, because it will probably bring at least SOME federal government aid to the state government -- it'll still open up schisms in his own party. The Tom DeLays are already gnashing their teeth at Clinton Reborn. And after all that -- his chances of losing California are still alot more then even odds.

There is a bright side to Ar-nuld. And that is that he may well become Bush's Nightmare.
