Your Obedient Serpent finally found out how to import the entirety of his LiveJournal into DreamWidth, where all the Cool Kids seem to be going.

It's the whole shebang, too: journal entries, comments, tags, filters, everything except my ridiculous gallery of icons (DW maxes out at 15, which really is plenty; LJ allows me 202, and I have 82. Time to pick and choose!)

LJ-specific templates like the Writer's Block questions didn't make it through; I don't know if polls did, either, since I don't use them enough to pick a poll-entry out without slogging through pages and pages of archives.

I don't know if I'm going to shift my primary posting habits over there, but now that I don't have to abandon eight years of archives, that's become feasible.

Of course, DreamWidth makes it much easier to cross-post, so it does make sense to make my posts from here_DW rather than over there_lj.

It looks like dreamwidth only accepts check for payment; no ccard, paypal or online service. Or am I just reading this wrong?

Do you use a free account there, or a paid one?

Free. The biggest reason I'm not just going to walk away from LJ is that Quel and I have lifetime accounts.

I think I have an invitation code, if you want one. Wow, remember when LJ was invite-only?

I've had a free Dreamworks account since forever... just never used it. Was considering importing my stuff there as per your post, just as a backup in case of Mass LJ Kersplody if nothing else. But since I'd be curious to have all my icons come over and such I thought maybe I'd buy a standard account, only to be stopped by the stone-age requirement of 'please snail mail a check, or, like, something.'

Sad to see you leaving. I don't think there's anything wrong with LJ and, frankly, don't feel like paying for 2 journal services.

They've been having some issues with their credit card processing company and should be rolling out a new one in the near future.

It isn't sudden at all. I picked up my dreamwidth after the strikethrough fail a while back, and a lot of people are currently unhappy with the link ganking LJ just did.

At least, for now.

Still, I am keeping backups in case I ever have to jump ship- I've got a cron job sucking down my journal updates twice a month. I'm thinking about increasing the frequency to weekly.

That said, I have no interest, need, or desire to move over to DreamWidth at the moment. Sure, some of the stuff they've done here is sort of blah, but honestly, I can't be bothered to have any sort of anger over it. I'm getting tired of being angry at stupidity. It's everywhere, and won't stop.

I don't see myself leaving LJ right away either, and y'know... I really appreciate the whole "angry at stupidity" motif.

I find that I only have so much time in the day and being mad and frustrated are not filling it wisely!
