Jobquest: Any ideas?

Does anyone have a suggestion for good places to find jobs in oceanography, cartography, or environmental earth systems science?

(I struck out "environmental" because if you use that as a keyword on a site like Monster, all you'll find are jobs sucking asbestos and changing HVAC filters. Not quite my field.)

I'm fed up with limiting myself to the Bay Area; nothing's here. I need to cast wider nets, if you'll forgive a fisheries metaphor.

I interned for NASA, for Pete's sake. This shouldn't be so hard. The last time I really got serious about job-hunting, I found the perfect job in a matter of WEEKS. I'd be WORKING there NOW if the project in question hadn't been put on hold for... hm... 14 months, so far.

I've spent too many years ignoring job postings because they're not local, though, and I'm too old to keep wasting my degree and my skills working in a comic book store, waiting for the Perfect Job to fall into my lap.

I don't really have an answer to your query, but if it's okay to answer a question with another question: have you rubbed elbows with any of the people involved in the wetlands restoration projects around the bay? Also, do you know braxus? He works for one of the parks districts and might be able to direct you to someone who knows someone, etc. Oh, and he likes dragons.

Braxus has been sending me leads that come up at his workplace, but thus far, I haven't made the cut on any of the three or four I've tried for.

And no, I haven't rubbed elbows with any of the wetlands restoration people locally. I'd LOVE to get in on, say, the restoration of the Cargill salt ponds in the South Bay, but I simply don't know who to contact. My people-networking skills are nil -- which is why I'm starting HERE, where I DO know people.

Check out saic.com. Decent DoD type company. Does a lot of contract work with things like NOAA and others. Treats its primary employees well.

Several states around the Great Lakes region (and Canada) have begun to knuckle down and get to work on a joint-project water preservation act. This will create several new positions I'm thinking. Would your skill be applicable to the largest body of fresh water in America?

Have you considered a job out of country? I've lost count of the times I've seen one big project or another along those lines being done up here in Canada. We seem to have oodles of teams and programs looking into all of those things. Especially the various Universities.

I'm sure we have room for another big fat Dragon up here. :3
