Understanding Athelind's Argot: "Unca"

"Unca" is an honorific that refers to an individual whose words or writing have had a marked influence on Your Obedient Serpent's philosophical development.

It is, obviously, a diminutive of "Uncle", and is in itself an homage to Unca Carl,* who invariably had Huey, Dewey and Louie address their elders as "Unca Donald" and "Unca Scrooge".

Note that Your Obedient Serpent doesn't have to agree with everything someone has said or done for them to receive the honorific. Sometimes, he just shakes his head sadly and says, "Yeah, there goes Unca Bob** again." Often, such lapses are instances when the person in question doesn't consistently apply his own avowed principles.

In Eb-Speak, it's Uncle Bob, Grandpa Isaac, and Crazy Uncle Harlan. And Mr. Wells, because we've never been formally introduced and, being a proper Victorian gentleman, he doesn't approve of familiarity.

Mr. Wells is Mr. Wells for me, too.

HPL, on the other claw, is "Howard", or "poor Howard".

Usually, however, it's "Aw, jeez, Harlan!"

"Unca Walt" would be Walt Kelly rather than Disney, and Joseph Campbell is usually just Joe. ("Sheesh, Joe, just 'cause it's blood doesn't make it Communion.")

Steve Jackson, however, is "Evil Stevie".

I usually give Joe "Unca" status, but "just because it's blood" got a spit-take from me. =)

Oh, and "But Of Course" on Unca Walt.

Disney is just plain "Walt". As in "Walt Sent Me."

And in re: this particular icon... for some reason, Kirby is just "Jack".
