For some reason, I was thinking along pretty much the exact same lines, today, using ants as an example of a civilization that has architecture, industry, agriculture, etc., but we don't regard as sentient as being, perhaps, an example of alienness. Not that ant colonies are sentient, but that our languages are simply so far different, our modes of thought so alien, that we can't comprehend each other.

Probably started because I think the Turing test is stupid. ;)

I find it ironic that many of the same people who disparage SETI with this logic will then turn around and honestly believe we're able to communicate with an infinitely powerful invisible man in the sky. Like we would even recognize omnipotence if we saw it.

Well, an all-powerful entity would surely be able to communicate with us.

Whether such a being would want to, that's another matter.
