It's confirmed: Kenneth Branagh is directing Thor. He's sufficiently entrenched that Entertainment Weekly and other media outlets have taken to calling it "Kevin Branagh's Thor", which suits me just fine.

Casting is underway. The actor who played George Kirk in the opening of Star Trek is slated to wield Mjolnir.

However, this is not the most important casting decision Branagh has to make.

Branagh, you see, has worked with BRIAN BLESSED several times.

Could anyone else really do justice to The Lion of Asgard?

But Blessed's really too old now. :\

From what I've seen, it doesn't seem to be slowing him down any.

Well, there's always Lionel Twain's solution: A combination of diet, exercise, and lots and LOTS of makeup.

You know, I have to say, the actor who played George Kirk was a handsome, handsome man.

(I also have a lady friend who, in a display of indelicateness, mentioned that she would let him* "fuck her blind," as it were.)

*Specifically the character, not the actor, I should add.

I . . . believe that you are correct about Volstagg and Brian Blessed. I . . . there really can be no other.

All this assumes that they bother casting that character. I'm not so certain they will. This will be an Origin Story, so part of it will be about the shmuck who picks up Mjolnir, so a good part of the movie will be about establishing him. Then they'll have Thor dealing with whatever threat they have as a Bigbad.

I seriously think that they probably won't do any sidestories with characters in Asgard.

Pffft. Who cares about Goldilocks? We want VOLSTAGG, by Odin!

More seriously, they'll almost certainly have some opening bit or flashback that explains just WHY the God of Thunder is walking Midgard as a frail, physically-impaired doctor. Given both the pattern of recent Marvel movies in the Avengers line, and Branagh's own track record, expect those scenes to be full of Easter Eggs and cameos.

"Alright, who ordered the large ha...oh, Volstagg. Of course."

Well, if they didn't pull Brian Blessed, John Rhys-Davies is still out there. Waiting to wander around in a huge beard and bellow.

Earlier today, Athelind asked who else could do the job. Before running out for lunch, I said "Whatsisbird from Sliders". :)

And I know he's still acting. I just saw him do Krod Mandoon.

The thing is, Rhys-Davies is notoriously difficult to get for a job, much less to direct. Supposedly he has allergies to certain costume materials, such as the clothing he wore when playing Gimli. That being said, I can certainly see him being an outstanding Volstagg.

I dunno. He did make at least one movie with Uwe Boll. I'm pretty sure that puts you into "Did the check clear?" territory.

I think his problem with his Gimli costume was with facial prosthetics, which is a common ailment.

You know, I think Blessed has pretty much aged perfectly to fill another role.
