There's a G.I. Joe movie coming out this summer.

Most of the buzz from the trailers has been positive, so far, but we're inevitably going to get a lot of bitching from the crowd who grew up on the '80s cartoon.

Considering that I had -- and still have -- a 1966-vintage Mercury Astronaut G.I. Joe, and was nearly 20 wheh your precious cartoon assaulted my fond childhood memories, there's not a whole lot I can say that is essentially different than what I said a year and a half ago when people were bitching about Alvin & The Chipmunks.

Come to think of it, I'm not really interested in your positive reactions, either.

A lot of the current adult generation's childhood memories is based upon cartoons that were made as glorified toy commercials.

However, most of the toy-commercial cartoons these days are either card-battling/monster-collecting Anime, or revisions of the toy cartoons of the Eighties. Does this mean that we're going to see a slew of Yu-Gi-Oh movies in ten to twenty years, all of which will be raged against by that adult generation for not living up to their childhood memories?

Meh. I'm going back to watching Phinneas & Pherb. There's a show that'll be looked back upon fondly, if there's any justice.

Also, it's worth noting that as someone whose only relationship to GI Joe was the toys themselves - I never got to watch the cartoon, as the cartoons weren't available on any Norwegian TV channels I had access to - the movie looks like brainless fun. It knows it's stupid, and relishes in it.

I had never seen the Mercury G.I. Joe before (I was never really ever into G.I. Joe). My older cousin had one of the large (and most likely valuable) G.I. Joe figures that my aunt would let me play with when we visited.

If my secret caching trick worked, that G.I. Joe is still buried in their sandbox in Thunder Bay.

The movie's being produced by Stephen Sommers, who did the Mummy movies and Van Helsing.

Say what you want about the quality of his movies, but I've always found them super fun. The guy knows what he wants to see in his movies, and crams 'em packed full of it. Perfect popcorn movies.

Plus dude is TOTALLY a furry. Mummy Returns had anthro jackals and a scorpiontaur. Van Helsing had the hottest fucking werewolves ever put to film. And Mummy 3 had buff sexy yetis!

I bet you the cost of your movie ticket there's some anthro animal (cooooobra perhaps?) in G.I. Joe.

Now, see, "It's a Stephen Sommers movie" throws a LOT more weight with me than the TITLE.

What if you have no reaction at all? What if you live in I-Don't-Care-verse where summer blockbusters have no relationship whatsoever to anything you say or do? Is that OK? ;)

...but by the very act of responding to this pop-culture-infused post, you've been dragged KICKING AND SCREAMING out of the I-Don't-Care-verse and into the DRAMAVERSE!!

By the way, if you hadn't picked up on it already, any entry in my journal with "The Hoard Potato" in the subject line is going to focus entirely on pointless pop culture matters, treating them as if they actually bear some kind of cultural significance.

And if you look at my "tag cloud", you'll quickly see that the "hoard potato" tags are by far the most dominant in my archives...

They are my favorite entries, Athe! I have always loved your take on pop culture and your love of the language. :)

Hey, kid! I'm a computah!
