From Time Magazine:

Bush Circumvents Congress and the People To Hand Over U.S. Military and Economy To A Foreign Government

Think my headline sounds shrill? Read the damned article.

This man is arrogating authority that violates the Constitution several times over. He has no right to broker these agreements, and is doing so in violation of the law of the land.

How can we be so acquiescent at his contemptuous disregard for the laws and the people of the United States?

The candidate bound and determined to carry on his policies of torture, ubiquitous surveillance and the Continuous War with Eurasia is running neck and neck with his opponent.

Wake up.

I brought this to the attention of a couple of right wing friends of mine and was told "jesus, shut the fuck up" and "it's not like anything bad is gonna happen."

When something bad DOES happen I will be nice and not say, "I told you so." But, will also leave them to their fate.

You know, sometimes I wish some sort of dire consequences would happen. :p

When their doctrine does result in a dire consequence, such as it did in 2001, they just hold it up as proof that we need more of it. Right-wing authoritarians are unable to see they are, were, or could be wrong, ever.

There's also good old revisionism. One relative is trying to convince me that the Patriot Act was a Clinton act, before Bush.

When confronted with the evidence, the reponse is "heh heh, well, Drake, that's what th' damn libbrel media wants you to think."

When I point out it's Fox News' archive, I get told to 'shaddup'.

...

Okay, I thought my relatives were stark raving bananas.

My maternal family is normal, thank H'ronmeer. But the paternal? Cray-zee, daddy-o. It worries me; I hope this acorn that's me like, fell way far from the tree. :P

For what it's worth, the dad family tends to have big chips on their shoulders and an inferiority complex; I think that's somehow related.

It has been my experience, in observing my own far-right relatives, that ultra-conservative tendencies and inferiority complexes go hand in hand. These people desperately need someone to feel superior to, so they latch onto the mean-spirited aspect of conservatism; it gives them a whole list of people to feel superior to, and reasons why.

The article mentions US forces having been under joint control before, such as with United Nations peacekeeping efforts.

I understand the Right tends not to like the U.N., and in particular, having to cede American sovereigntywe're-right-so-there to it.

So...exactly why your associates would even be slightly in favor of this, I cannot begin to understand.

Of course, I suffer from...what's it called...ah, yes. "Internal consistency". I'm told that's sometimes lacking on the Right.

I have noticed that - that my rightleaning associates are ok with anything the Bush administration does, even if it is something similar to a Democrat act they've condemned before.

As I recently told [livejournal.com profile] chris_sawyer, one relative used to cry big tears at how Clinton, thru FEMA, was going to have us in barbwire enclosed camps. But the Patrot Act doesn't even faze her.

My theory is this... The Republicans have crafted for themselves a "cool kids in the school" persona. Popular, no issues more than skin deep, winners you want to be around and friends with....

And woe to any nerd who points out there shortcomings.

It does remind me of those school days.... Everyone wanted to hang out with the winners, even if appearances were decieving. So, that's what these folks are doing and so long as the Republicans can keep up the "we're cool and fun, the Dems are gloomy nerds worried about melting icecaps" it'll continue.

My theory MAY be flawed but from what I've seen it at least explains the blind cheering and acceptance. :p

The longer I watch this go on, the more I think that the majority of the people in this country don't give a fuck what goes on in Washington (or beyond our borders for that matter) as long as they have cable television, Starbucks, and McDonald's.

Hmmm... bread and circuses, anyone?

I think it is true that most of the people in America don't care what goes on in DC, but I don't actually think it's because of bread and circuses.

I think that most of it comes from the feeling of helplessness in the face of the government. The government - and I think this is true of both major parties - have simply abandoned the majority of Americans. There is not much of a sense that they can effect the government, that the government cares about them, or that the government does anything meaningful in their lives. Corrupt government is in bed with corrupt businesses and most Americans feel they can't do anything about it. So they ignore politics out of sheer rage and frustration.

I'm not saying it's right, but I'm saying that the problems are worse than Americans simply being made numb by entertainment options. I think Americans accept the numbing entertainment options because they feel impotent in the face of government corruption and indifference.

Who wrote that article?

You know, I'm aware that mud slinging, spin, and even downright lies happen on both sides of the isles. The frightening part is that the lies have become part of their strategy.. fully knowing they have no truth, but still saying them over and over because they know that if they say them enough, people will believe it.

Whats even worse is they are one after another expanding their powers while reducing their oversight.. I just don't see how people can look at the lack of accountability coupled with a growing disregard for facts and honesty as a party they want to put into power?

I think ultimately, the problem with him and his associates is that...

...they hate us for our freedom.

Yeah, well, this is America. When a Democrat or liberal says anything, it's shrill, it's clueless, yadda yadda yadda yadda yadda. When a Republican says that environmental policy doesn't matter because Jesus will be here in a few years... or that polar bears aren't actually endangered and anthropogenic global warming is a myth... or that waterboarding isn't torture... or that our aim was always to get Saddam Huss, uh, Osama bin-Laden... or that they were heroic opponents of the Bridge to Nowhere... or thinks singing about "Bomb Iran" and joking about how we're killing Iranians with our cigarette exports are hilariously funny jokes... or so many hundreds of other examples? Well, that's cool, that's fine.

There's always an excuse. Sometimes it's a straw man, sometimes it's some stupid discussion of experience, sometimes it's even a blatant appeal to religion. But there's always some sort of excuse.

I'm so sick of it. And I have this bad feeling that, if I stay in this country and vote and petition and contribute and write in letters and do all the things a nice DoD brat former Scout former defense contractor employee is supposed to do, that 10 years down the line people are going to be going on about how great Dubya's administration was and voting Republicans in then, too.
