When it comes to apocalyptic scenarios, why do I find the discovery of Xibalba more plausible than firing up the Large Hadron Collider?

Because ancient soul-devouring beasts from Mesoamerica make better RPG campaigns than microscopic black holes from Switzerland?

Because you read a lot of Lovecraft?

Oh, and the Large Hadron Collider just sounds awesome. You read this (http://www.cracked.com/article_16583_5-scientific-experiments-most-likely-end-world.html)?

I'm pretty sure HPL would have been freaked about the Large Hadron Collider. Tentacles would have been popping out all over the place. :)

At this point we're kind of wondering whether there's anything this machine can do that doesn't involve killing you and everyone you care about.

Awesome. :)

Also, I follow up your link with this link.

I am reminded that one scientist on the US Hydrogen Bomb project was assigned to make sure it didn't set the atmosphere on fire.

Which brings the point, in turn, that it isn't the plausible apocalypse that you have to worry about, because those are foreseen. It's the surprise ones that get you.

Because Xibalba is just creepy. We understand the risks and dangers in shooting cosmic levels of energy around. We have no fucking clue how these people built that. We can't even hand wave it. Ocram's Razor does nothing.

It's all mythology. And like any good mythological term, "Large Hadron Collider" is fun to say.

Besides, who said apocalyptic scenarios with mesoamerican deities couldn't also involve particle accelerators? I mean it'd work in "Rifts," right?

And in the Dresden Files, and, as Chris pointed out above, in Lovecraft's own works.

After I posted this, I realized that the COMBINATION was FAR too ominous.

But, hey, it's still preferable to a McCain presidency.

"Keep the change, the worlds going to end in 5 minutes"
"Oh? Pretty good luck for Arsenal if it does, eh?"
"No, not really.."

C'mon, McCain is pretty much a Lovecraftian Horror in his own right.

We have enough problems with Macavity Brown in the UK.
I got a glimpse and earful of McCains running mate, Ms Putin... sorry Palin and she immediately struck me as being worth traversing a 6 lane highway to avoid......

May God guide the American voter and may Diebold not pre-empt the outcome.

Is America truly Obama-nable?
