You know, this is what's missing from most of the spin off Star Trek media franchises; a sense of humour. Whatever the failings of classic Trek, the writers and actors had a lot of fun creating comedic situations.

Just think of some of the classic episodes from the original series; "A Piece of the Action", "The Trouble with Tribbles", and this one, "I, Mudd" for the emphasis of comedy over drama.

Actually, that's not quite right. Each of the series has their moments of humor, each one has it written in and in a few cases, ad-libbed and left by the director and/or editor. It's just that humor of the late 60's was different than what it has gone through an evolution (or some would say DE-evolution) of in the 80's, and 90's, to today.

You do have moments in TNG, DS-9, VOY and even ENT where there are entire episodes devoted to silliness and humor, and many episodes where you will be able to see the crew getting a bit "over the top" in their roles, or adding in that one line, just for the sake of adding a bit of lightness to offset the levity of the rest of the episode.

I think the big difference is that the new series have continually tried to break away from cliche like can be found (or founded) within TOS.

I always wanted to see more of Harry Mudd. The three episodes (two live, one animated) and one book (as I recall) were fabulous, and the actor that played Mudd, Roger Carnell, nailed the character perfectly. There need to be more rogues in the Star Trek universe; I think it makes it more realistic that even Roddenberry's utopian society has gadflies.
