The Three Things Meme

Snagged from A Whole Lot O' Folks

  1. Post 3 things you've done in your lifetime that you don't think anybody else on your friends list has done.
  2. See if anybody else responds with "I've done that." If they have, you need to add another!(2.b., 2.c., etc...)
  3. Have your friends cut & paste this into their journal to see what unique things they've done in their life.

Oof. This would be a lot easier if [livejournal.com profile] eclipsegryph and [livejournal.com profile] wy weren't on my f-list; a lot of my best stories are Coast Guard tales. Still...
  1. Visited a major landmark just because it appeared in a movie -- and then had natural phenomena provide better special effects than the movie did.*
  2. Attended the funeral (or other major occasion) of one of your all-time favorite writers (or other celebrities) in an official or invited capacity.**
  3. Gone from being a child-free bachelor to a grandfather less than two years.

* Devil's Tower, Wyoming: lightning storm. The year after Close Encounters of the Third Kind came out, no less!
** I buried Robert A. Heinlein.

You've got me on the special effects caveat on number one. And maybe "major". I've been several places just 'cause they were in a movie. Devil's Tower's on my itinerary for this summer. I'm Excited!

I figured almost EVERYONE on my f-list who's done any travelling has gone someplace just because it was in a movie (or a book).

My mom has her Serious Geek moments, with her primary geekiness being Disaster Novels. When we were RVing around the country thirty years ago, we would hit places because they were in movies, or in our big book of Weird American Folklore, or -- best of all -- spend a week or two retracing the path followed by the protagonists of one of the Disaster Novels we'd all just read.

In one of those bits of Coyote Serendipity, we couldn't get a slot at the campground right at the base of the Tower, so we settled for one a mile or two away. We parked so the Tower was visible through the motor home's windshield -- and thus had front-row drive-in seats when the storm moved in.

I went to visit Hagia Sophia because I studied it... technically that's in a book I read, but really it's a different motif altogether. And well, the trip wasn't entirely about that location, either. Or something.

I think I prattle.

Devil's Tower would be cool, though!

I've done number one (Bronson Caverns - Ro-Man! Ro-Man!!) but other than being a eerily hot, still day there wasn't much otherwise of any movie type effects going on.

Wait, does being on the cavern set of the first Pirates of the Carribean movie count? ;)
