Ubuntu Ubupdate

I have been cautioned against trying to install Ubuntu onto the 80 GB, since it's full of years and years of data that would make me cry if it went away.

I need a decent backup system. There's just no good way to BACK UP that much data.

I also need to clean off my desk; the drive-juggling will go much faster if I don't have to keep running back and forth to the kitchen table to do surgery.

External hard drive. Fry's currently has a splendid deal going on the Seagate FreeAgent Pro 320GB. USB2, FireWire and eSATA. $99. And it's pretty.

I bought three (though one is technically a gift for someone else).

D'oh! Looks like that particular deal might be over. They do have the 500GB non-Pro version for $119 currently, but it's USB2 only (whereas I like multiple interfaces for better future-proof-ness).

I already HAVE the 320 GB; it's sitting in my dresser drawer, wrapped and protected.

Oh, wait -- as a BACK UP solution. Whoa and wowsers.

I'm not sure my ol' box HAS USB2. I think it's USB1 only.

pdumpfs is your friend. Even if it hasn't been updated since 2004.

There's also online backup systems. Heard an add on, of all things, the Rush Limbaugh show for one...$49.95 for a year, unlimited number of files.

Don't recall the name, or I'd have looked it up by now; I've been stung by the crash and no backup devil myself.

If you have the shiny new 320GB already, you could just put the test install on that. If it goes well, huzzah.. If it goes well, but wipes everything, oh well. If the test goes well and you want to keep it, you can make a data partition, put in the 80, copy everything, wipe the 80, then install on the 80.

Of course, this method either leaves you sand data, or sand dual-boot while you test Ubuntu, but it's less disaster prone.

Long term plan: install Ubuntu on the 320, dump the data from the 80 onto the 320, discover everytying works better anyway on Ubuntu, ditch the 20 and Windows entirely, have a one-drive box. Or maybe a two-320 box, and use the other drive as an onboard backup.

I switched from Windows XP to Ubuntu about a month ago. If your experience is to be anything like mine was then you'll never, ever, want to go back to Windows.
