Can we impeach him YET?

Once again, the resident of the Oval Office has violated the oath that he took to uphold the Constitution:
President Bush has quietly claimed sweeping new powers to open Americans' mail without a judge's warrant, the DailyNews has learned.
Let's refresh our memories, shall we?
Amendment IV
Once again, he has claimed this power through the use of a "Signing Statement" -- his own little bit of legislation, scribbled onto a bill as he scrawls his name on the bottom.
These "signing statements" have no precedent or legal standing.
His use of them is unlawful.
Those who would enforce them commit treason.

Amendment IV
The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized.

Date: 2007-01-05 03:42 am (UTC)That's because a large number of Americans suffer under the delusion that their country is Special, and things don't happen the same way here as Those Other Places. Not ever.
And this presents a tricky issue for the people who crave more and more power, more control, more authority, either out of true greed, or a warped sense of American manifest destiny (and via that, the delusion that the one, true America is something that they must protect, and bring about either by law, or by disregarding prior laws).
They push more and more, but not quite too far yet, possibly still cautious about tipping their hand. They believe that much of their supporters will fall in line behind them, but know they don't have quite enough. So those like President Shrub continue to make little moves like these, trying to lay the groundwork for the sort of control they really believe is necessary to protect the American Way (even if you have to destroy it, to do it).
As usual, the first people to suffer as things get worse will likely be the poor and disenfranchised - they simply don't have the money to fight back properly or make themselves important to the type of dominionists who have been manipulating the United States for a while now.
