"Coywolf" sounds like some furry persona's name.

We're having the same thing happen around here, with the cougars, deer, and even a few bears coming into the suburban jungle to find food and a comfy place to sleep at night.

You may think I'm vicious or sadistic in some fashion, but I laugh my head off when some woman or kid is screaming because they're toy-sized dog or house cat has been picked off by a hawk or eagle right before their eyes.

I love being one of the predators.

Oh, I won't think any such thing. When I lived on old Fort Ord at CSUMB -- an area with vast acres of essentially-pristine wilderness, thanks to spending a a century or two as a military base -- coyotes would sing to us at night and trot by our back fence without a care in the world.

Anyone who let their cat out at night was just ASKIN' for it. But many did.

(Meanwhile, I should observe that outdoor cats decimate the populations of small mammals and songbirds in an area. I love cats, but they're INDOOR PETS. Becoming 'yotechow is just karma.)

Cats are predators, plain and simple. The fact that we've bred them for thousands of years as pets doesn't mean they lose any of that instinct. My cat pretty much jumps on my feet whenever it wants to go out or do something and I'm not up for it. It's also true, however, that if they're let out and, in the midst of prowling, are taken down by another predator, that's how things work.

Coyotes! They've gotten more furries shot on the side of the road at night than anything!
