If your phone number comes up on my display as "Blocked", don't bother calling my cell phone. I not only won't answer you, it'll just wind up pissing me off for the next half-hour.

Heck, if I'm in convenient glancing range of the landline's caller ID, I still won't answer a blocked number.

Much as I hate people who answer privacy concerns with "If you're not doing anything wrong, you have nothing to hide", in this particular case -- well, yeah. If you were someone I wanted to talk to, you'd let me see who you were before I picked up. Therefore...

I can think of only one good reason, off the top of my head, to block a number when you're calling out, and it's one I've used regularly. If I have to call home about a student's behaviour from my home, I will block the number out of concern for my own privacy. If the parent doesn't pick up, I'll try the next day from school, where i don't have to block the number. But the last thing I need is for some kid with a beef to get hold of my home phone number.

My dad set up my phone before I got here, so don't blame me.

Phonecards could also result in this sort of blockage, now that I think about it.

Is there anybody who would be calling you with a phonecard?

I've used a couple of phonecards (got them free for whatnot), and "we have the technology"--they pass through the number you are calling from.

If you call with a blocked number, expect to have to leave a message and wait for me to call back. It's as simple as that.

You check your messages?

Unfortunately it seems that checking my messages is preferable to not checking my messages.

I don't have land-line caller ID, but numbers I don't know (blocked or not!) get left to voice mail. Because I've found out that my cell number shares its last four digits with a popular (though I think they suck...) pizza place in the area. As for the first three digits... Try pressing the keys on a phone but miss the top row and hit the middle row instead and... you get my number. So yeah, I've had to tell people that I don't have pizza for them, nor will I ever. Now I just let it go to voice mail... They hear the message and figure it out, and if it's important and they really *do* mean to call me, they leave a message.
