This is Major Tom to Ground Control
I'm stepping through the door
And I'm floating in a most a peculiar way
And the stars look very different today...

SuitSat One

Here am I floating round my tin can
Far above the Moon
Planet Earth is blue
And there's nothing I can do....

ah, but...

Ashes to ashes, funk to funky
We know Major Tom's a junkie
Strung out in heaven's high
Hitting an all-time low

:)

glorious photo. hope you & lonz are well

I'll see your Ashes, and raise you...

Far beneath the ship
The world is mourning
They don't realize
He's alive
No one understands
But Major Tom sees
Now the light commands
This is my home
I'm coming home....

Darker Still:

The time has come
to leave again;
activate
the Noah Plan.
Returning to
the universe -
give out the word:
Abandon Earth.

And the strange thing, the German versions of both songs (Vollig Losgelost [floating weightless] and Die Wuste Lebt [The Living Desert]) are rather darker then either of the English versions.

Well aware am I of this. However, I LIKE the English version.

Oh, there's plenty of good things to be said for both.

Vollig Losgelost was simply more realistic (the likely end fate for Major Tom was the likely fate of anyone suffering a fatal spacecraft malfunction like that -- he froze to death). But I liked the 2001 tribute in the English version. :>

Die Wueste Lebt and The Noah Plan were pretty much different songs sharing the same tune. Die Wueste Lebt always stuck me as "global warming gone mad" -- and humanity's indifference to it was rather frighteningly prophetic. The Noah Plan was much more in the realm of science fiction, but man, it was fun to listen to. (From what I have read, it actually was a tribute to a particular Doctor Who story. It wouldn't surprise me!)

Suitsat 1

Yes.. I heard its transmission on 2 meters when it flew overhead... was up until 1AM purposely to hear that 5 minute's worth of historical radio broadcast.

One of my all time favorite songs. :)

I love that song. Makes me cry every single time I hear it though. Every single time, without fail, I cry like someone killed my dog or something. To date, it's the only thing I know that can do that without fail.

It's a little less intense since I was told that Tom ends up alright.

The best version of Space Oddity is not teh one most-often played, but the one on Bowie's "Sound + Vision" collection. That's a studio rehearsal session with JUST an acoustic guitar backing it up.

He ends it with a gasping sob that's just heart-wrenching.

Really? I might have to get a hold of that. As of late I've been gaining a huge interest in Bowie. Space Oddity is still my favorite song of his, however.
