Anything that might remind Christians that there are other religions, and that many of them also celebrate holy days around the Solstice, is an "assault on their faith".
"So the Pagan religion had very big festivals, remember, on Easter and Christmas. Christians come along and have very big festivals on Easter and Christmas. Jesus died on one and was born on the other.. Hm hm hm hm?"
Interesting, why do you say late September? I thought it was supposed to be very early spring-time, because if shepherds were watching their flocks by night, wouldn't that indicate lambing season?
Repeated from elsewhere, it's part of the whole semantics game. If some though not all Christians can repeat often and loudly enough that basically, to be Christian is to be a right winger with a deep rooted belief that this country's destiny is to be dominated by a Christian state cult, then that's all people will understand Christianity as being. It's basically repeating that Coke is the Real Thing for years on end, only with religion.
And worse, as a faith rooted in someone's willingness to die for a greater truth, Christianity is set up to invite martyr complex. The fair minded who profess the religion have no interest in being martyrs when it simply isn't true; but those eager to push their point of view will gleefully claim any outrage, no matter how imaginary.
