Be Careful What You Wish For.
Jun. 7th, 2005 07:06 amInoffensive Loonatics Design.
I hope you're happy now.
Look at them. They're... happy. And smiling. And, well, hopelessly watered-down. Those wonderful, sleek, sharp, stylized character designs... Barneyfied. With big, happy eyes with whites and pupils and irises.
I miss the Glowing Wedges Of Color.
It's so Safe, it's offensive in its own right. Hell, the Looney Tunes were never this Friendly And Reassuring. I don't see a hint of subversion or mischief in those Big Friendly Eyes. Visually, there was a whole lot more o' Bugs in Buzz Bunny than in "Ace".
Everyone was horrified that the original Loonatics were going to be "violent super-heroes" -- but note that the reason that you can't find the original Looney Tunes anywhere but Boomerang, an obscure pay channel, is because parent groups objected to the violence of the classic cartoons.

Date: 2005-06-07 03:08 pm (UTC)Don't worry, these designs are not final. Once the American Family Association gets a load of the pink triangle on Lexi and the Purple Triangle on Spaz, they will turn their great engine of Homophobic Paranoid Fantasy against it.

Date: 2005-06-07 05:48 pm (UTC)The old designs were cheap, crappy rip offs of animation styles done better before, to try and capture "what kids want."
These new designs are bland, crappy rip pffs of even older styles done better before, to try and capture "what kids and parents want."
Everything I've seen about this shown even before the changes just made it seem like a marketing ploy to bring in new toy lines. It never seemed like the artists actually cared about what they were making at any point.

Date: 2005-06-07 06:06 pm (UTC)That's the reason a good many cartoons get made in the first place. Heh.

Date: 2005-06-07 11:10 pm (UTC)Of course, they could've made a good show with either. I guess we'll just have to see.
