I'm by no means a Star Wars nerd, so I'm probably wrong, but...

Shouldn't it be "Emperor Sidious"? Palpatine is his old name. Isn't that like saying "Pope Ratzinger"? ;>

Well, tt was always "Emperor Palpatine" in the references to the classic movies, pre-Ep I.

I assume that there are other protocols involved in the use of one's Lodge Name.

It must be complicated, because no one ever refers to Darth Vader as "Lord Skywalker." :>

There is one line in 'Empire' where the Emperor uses 'Son of Skywalker' to refer to Luke; of course, he says this to Vader, almost as if he's subtly reminding Vader that he's not the person he used to be.

Then again, I heard that in the DVD edition, they changed the dialogue to that scene, so I'm not sure what it all says now.

I was fascinated at how, in the first movie - IE, 'A New Hope', not... well, you know what I mean - Obi Wan calls Vader 'Darth'.

Which as we know now is simply the Sith honorific meaning 'lord'. So... Obi Wan calls him 'lord'?

Or Lucas still thought Darth was his first name, then? ;)

'Sidious' was his sooper-sekrit Sith title. Since he was Chancellor Palpatine, when the Republic became the Galactic Empire, he simply assumed the title of Emperor Palpatine.

When the Dalek started to elevate, I half expected to hear the theme song from The Jeffersons start playing.

Ya know, that's exactly the observation Rose made last week in "Dalek" "We're safe! It hasn't got legs, it can't climb stairs!"

And lo, the Dalek looked up and spaketh thusly "Elevate!"

And the smugness of the victim was dashed forever.

Rose tends to get dashed in a rather lot of ways, doesn't she?

"Remembrance of the Daleks" dashed the whole stairs thing in the Sylvester McCoy era...

But it is definately time to get you over to watch the new show. "ELEVATE!"

Indeed. Now if only it were on here. And no, I don't download.

I work in industry which is definitely adversely affected by Internet piracy, but I don't see any ethical issue with watching episodes of the new Doctor Who that have been download off of the Internet.

For one, I'm only using downloaded episodes to circumvent the unfortunate happenstance of not living in a country where the show is broadcast, where I could see it for free. (Most people wouldn't have such qualms about having a friend in the U.K. or Canada taping the episodes on VHS and sending them to me; the difference is merely the improved medium or recording and lack of paying for postage.)

Secondly, if and when the new series were ever to go on sale in the U.S., I have every intention of purchasing it. This relates to the above, in that my goal isn't go around gloating 'LOL I getz teh shows for free!!1!' or anything (which, again, is sort of moot, since watching the show on the air is free anyway, and that's just not an option).

Now, if I were to go around downloading entire Doctor Who serials from the old series that are available on DVD in the U.S., then that would be out-and-out piracy, and ergo, that's why I don't do that.

I didn't say I'm not downloading it for ethical reasons. I just don't like watching stuff on a computer if I have a choice. So I'll just wait.

And yes, in "choice" I'm including the option to wait for a proper release of some sort, whether televised or on DVD.

I can see where Doctor Who is very... well, British, but with the sheer quality of this new series, I don't see why Sci-Fi is passing up an opportunity to show it in the U.S. I really hope they change that.

I've thought SciFi has shown bouts of questionable wisdom in programming for some time now. This is just the latest in a long line... Heh.

Ah, okay! That makes sense. I never did understand people who watched entire movies on their computer monitors (which makes me wonder who REALLY wants to watch a movie on their Sony PSP, oif).

What I do at my place is just get the downloaded movie files put onto a DVD itself, and then just pop that into my Xbox (which is effectively my DVD player) and watch it on the TV screen that way. It's not HDTV quality picture or anything, but it looks better than most things recorded on TiVo do.

I'd need a DVD burner first.

I wouldn't need to go that route though- I could just hook up the laptop to the TV and play things directly on the larger screen.

Agreed with the fox there. I am highly disappointed in Sci-Fi's decision not to pick up the show, but I am a fan, not a businessman.

If they become availble for purchase in a NTSC Region 1 format DVD, I will spend money on it. If some PBS station starts showing it, Ill throw pledge drive money at them.

I honestly think this show is the best Sci-Fi on TV right now next to the New Battle Star Gallactica. I will continue to try and get as many people hooked on it as possible. No admission charge.

The only Dr. Who I have downloaded, despite the multitude of torrents out there, are the 1996 Movie and the New Series. Which I cannot purchase in the US. (The movie will probally never be due to licencing agreements between Fox, WB, Sky and the BBC)

The sad, sad, sad thing is is that I'm struck with the urge to try to write fanfic for both Doctor Who and Battlestar Galactica. I just... aaaiiiieeeee! *clutches head*

Happily, I always have my duty to write Furry porn to distract me.

The best science fiction on television right now is Numb3rs.
