Ladies and gentlemen, Sluggy Freelance has Jumped the Shark. I'm dropping it from my rotation after many years of faithful reading. After wrapping up a long, well-done, emotionally-intense storyline a few months back, the strip took a side-track into a confusing dead end that even Pete admits he never quite got the hang of.

He's dropped that, and gone back to the main characters -- but all of the momentum from "That Which Redeems" has been lost.

If Pete ever recaptures the Nifty, please let me know.

I wouldn't....
GPF is weird occasionally but never less than entertaining...
and the recent Trudy storyline was good...

For me, GPF jumped the shark YEARS ago. As it drifted further and further from Zany Office Comedy through Improbable Spy Spoof to "WTF is this jester guy anyway??", I finally realized that I Just Didn't Care Anymore.

I enjoy Todd & Penguin, however.

Yup, that's when I started disliking it as well, the whole surepitious machinations wossname.

I keep reading it and don't know why, much like User Friendly...

Truthfully, That Which Redeems felt stale for me. It lacked a great deal of what made Sluggy classic: crisp jokes, real drama, and excitable, likable characters. Oh, there were times that made it good, but the events of the Holiday Wars Saga leading up to it were a bit of a slowdown, but That Which Redeems was near absurd in its length and lack of real bite. With the return of Bun-Bun and some new, interesting characters, I think he's brought life back into the series. This new 'interuum' with Torg and the rest is still funny, yes, and takes us back a lot to the good old days. I'm sorry that we differ in opinion here, but I think that Pete has brought the better part of Sluggy back now.

You're not alone in feeling that way. I felt that way two, three years ago. It just stopped being interesting or funny for me. *shrug*

I dunno, I thought he jumped back with his Tori Amos-fueled "Fire and Rain" angst-fest a few years ago.. but then he managed to unjump a few months later, so who knows. Give him a year, and maybe it'll stop sucking again.
