...does ANYONE actually respond to these bloody pop-under ads?

What is the point?

I'll click on banner ads now and then, because I know what page they're supporting, and I'm in favor of web advertising that's up-front and fairly innocuous.

Well, okay, pop-unders are at least an attempt to be even more innocuous than a banner, but I want some accountability. I want to know what site sent me there.

They are probably finiding out that people don't visit sites that are ghetto enough to have huge pop ups.

I, uh, haven't seen any pop-unders in so long I can't remember the last time one showed up.

>..>

But even if I saw 'em I wouldn't click 'em.

Umm . . . yes. Lots of my users. And then I spend 90 minutes cleaning the spyware off their PC's.

Oh, yeah. Now they just download a spyware onto your oh, so secure windows box, and the pop up's are generated right there on your box. Even if you are not online. :o

If you see more and more of a type of ad, it only means one thing.

It's working.

5% of those that view a pop-up actually click on it, for instance. *bleh*

And considering how many there are of those things, that's enough people to justify more of them. Icky.

Agreed. Now if there was just a way to penalize the people who do click on the ads....

That's my solution to spam. Prosecute the people who buy from spammers, just like you prosecute people who purchase services from prostitues.

Indeed! Imagine the sting operation. The Feds will be putting out their own spam and pop-ups, heh.

Use Firefox? http://adblock.mozdev.org/

My favorite feature? Control-Shift-F, and all those stupid resource-hogging Flash ads in a page get turned off with a nice simple "Flashblock" banner across them. }:=8>
