[livejournal.com profile] athelind: You know, our grandson won't take out the trash if there's a hint of a drizzle, but he has no problem going out and riding his bike in weather far wetter.

[livejournal.com profile] quelonzia: Kids are like that, honey. I was like that. My kids were like that. You were like that.

[livejournal.com profile] athelind: Honey, I was a kid in Southern California in the 1970s. We didn't have rain.

Okay, so the drought of 1976-1977 was only two years, but it seemed longer.

When I was 12, we lived 2 miles away from the bus stop, it was through the open field then through the woods to the main highway. There was a hill in the middle of the woods.

So yes, I did walk 2 miles up hill both ways to get to school :)

my brother the redoubtable one, has somewhat of a reputation as a droughtbreaker.

He first manifested this talent when he moved to a town in northern central Queensland (or possibly central Northern Queensland) where they had not had a significant rainfall for seven years. Within 3 months, they had a flood.

He then moved to another town several hundred kilometres away, where again they had not had significant rainfall for several years. Within 3 months, they had a flood also.

He's now moved to the coast of Queensland, and since he's been there they've had several hurricanes.

Maybe he should have travelled to California in the 70s :-)

My aunt had the same reputation. She ended at least two droughts with torriential rain by visiting California.

My mom? She brought fog. Went to the Grand Canyon -- it was solid fog right up to the rim. Went to Crater Lake -- same thing.

Well, I grew up in a seven-year drought. Psshaw.

Come to think of it, you probably remember the 80s too.

I spent much of the '80s in other parts of the country, like Texas and Alaska, so my weather memories are pretty skewed. I remember the big El Nino floods of '80-'81, and the unseasonal storms of '87, but otherwise, nothing really stands out.
