John Deere markets Walking Machine

Not a prototype. Not a concept model. Not a dream. Not an Imaginary Story.

This is available now.

I so want one of these. It just jumped to the top of my Lottery List. I'd take it to Burning Man or something, or get the guys from Monster Garage to turn it into some Kirbyesque monstrosity.

Not that it doesn't already qualify.

Dude. All it needs is two little gleaming, malevolent red headlights and it'd be one of the things from the Matrix. XD

Or some gleaming, white headlights and some fur and it could be one of those things from esuvee.com

It looks like something out of Wild Wild West or Space 1889.

That's awesome. And no ugly, environmentally unfriendly logging tracks either.

Isn't logging itself ugly and un-environmental? :P

Not if it's done sustainably, choosing specific trees rather than clear-cutting old-growth forests. Actually, a century of overzealous fire prevention has had negative impacts on forests, as well -- when fires DO take hold in overgrown forests now, they do far more damage. Logging by "thinning out" is a decent compromise, and that's what this gizmo seems well-equipped to handle.

Yeah, I remember seeing a prototype for a vehicle like this over ten years ago. I don't think it had any attachments for doing anything, but the six-legged walking frame was definitely there. Neat stuff, eh?

Yep. I want one. But why limit it to logging? I can see a need for excavators in difficult terrain.

But the only attachments I'd want on mine are a giant pair of grabbing arms.

Rig the grabbing arms up front, and move the big, overhead crane-arm to the stern.

I always wanted a scorpion mech.

The first time I saw one of these it was from a picture of a European larp. The dressed it up as a big monster. Ahh, how much fun that must have been.

I wish I still had the link, it was on a non-english site so I don't even know what to put into a search engine to find it again. If I do come across it I'll let you know.

Wait till you see what I'm building. (sinister grin)

In some ways what I'm building is bigger than that machine.

And it walks.
