Navy Sub hits uncharted undersea mountain.

Between this and the December 26 tsunami, the need for extensive, detailed, high-resolution mapping of the ocean floor has become evident.

That's what I do.

Resume available on request.

I thought they kinda had sonar to prevent running into a lot of things. ^^() But more maps are always good.

Well, correct me if I'm mistaken, somebody, but:

There are two types of sonar. "Passive" sonar is used simply to listen in -- say, for the sound of another sub's propellers (screws). "Active" sonar is more like a bat's echolocation, though not nearly as precise.

Why would a sub bother with passive sonar? Because other subs can hear active sonar.
