I can't quite figure out why a true Fundamentalist Christian would live in America. As far as I can tell, the Americas are never mentioned in the Infallible Word of God, and thus Do Not Exist. Like dinosaur "fossils", these false continents are obviously a trick of Satan, designed to decieve the Rightous into folly and sin.

Because, like all Rules from the Fundamentalist Handbook, the one about Not Being Mentioned only applies when they say it applies.

Besides, here in the States, where freedom of dissent is so prized, they get to play the Poor Persecuted Fundie card.

Hell, I had someone lecture me, just yesterday, that my aversion to having my pockets picked to pay for state-sponsored religious displays was just a mean-spirited attempt to ruin his holiday season.

I'm assuming you don't really want answers to these questions about fundies, right?

Actually, I wouldn't mind hearing how they rationalize that one.

I don't think rational ever comes into play on anything the fundies have to say.

I think it's coals to Newcastle, too, to say that the whole fundie political movement is just a rally banner to get folks marching behind. The mystery isn't how they can rationalize it - the true mystery is, after decades of seeing other political groups do this, and of reading cautionary tales about it, how many people STILL will accept any argument thrown their way and let themselves be drawn into backing them. I guess it's all about being part of what's percieved as 'the in crowd'.

Many in my family have gone fundamentalist/'red state' - and after you ask and inquire and question you realize it's just because they want to be on what they see as the winning team.

Of course, I wouldn't lump most Christians into that crowd... kind of as pointed out in Heinlein and Atwood, the political fundamentalists aren't really Christian at all.

They're just the same old jackboots.

Remember, the bible is a buffet -- they pick what they want but ignore the rest. I here levidicus commonly quoted as a reason why homosexuals shouldn't have rights, but it's really a book of jewish law, more than anything else.

Of course, modern man loves his poly/cotton blend shirts and lobster. And we certainly can't give something like that up.

A thought occurred to me recently:

Many of the laws in Leviticus are, for the time period, some decent health codes. Shellfish? Oh, no -- not nearly enough ice around to keep those suckers from spoiling. Pork? Fuck, man, y'ever hear of trichinosis? Boiling the calf in the milk of its mother...not sure, maybe cross-contamination?

And I won't get into the rules about menstruation.

Anyway, I was wondering if the codes against homosexuality (which, in the minds of the breeders of the day, meant anal sex) might also fall under health; after all, we're talking about a time of no condoms.

Then again, it could just be "Look, do you want kids? Then don't go stickin' Tab A anywhere but Slot B, okay pal?"

Just to offer a little contrast, I'll point out fundamentalists in Israel, which is kind of the most mentioned place in the Bible, seem to act pretty close to their Christian, American equivalents.

Just as an aside are ANY countries, apart from Egypt, Assyria, Rome and many old middle eastern countries mentioned ? That would sort of limit their 'true' potential living spaces ?
