Despite all those minor glitches in the recent election, democracy in this country is in no danger, because nobody tried to poison Kerry with Dioxin.

That's right, folks -- things can't possibly be bad here, because there's something more obviously bad elsewhere.

I do feel that the while all countries are subject to some of the same BS, it's put through the filter of their national identity. So in Chile, it might be a foreign backed revolution that slaughtered the opposition in the most unsubtle way; in Ukraine, you have a tampered election and a far more subtle assassination attempt; Americans don't believe in physically assassinating opposition leaders, but politics revolves partly around character assassination.

They didn't poison Kerry with dioxin for two reasons: They didn't really really need to, and it might have been caught.

I think it's just the first reason, and maybe that they hadn't thought of it. No Republican fears getting caught anymore. It has been established that in this century, they can commit any crime, get found out, make it a matter of public record, and still convince everyone that it (a) didn't really happen, and (b) was an acceptable thing for them to do. I think anyone who runs in 2008 should watch what they eat and drink.

Go back and watch The Prisoner, 'Free for All', and try to not draw connections between that episode's view on 'free' elections and our current predicament. I just finished it myself and it was most depressing... especially No. 2's comments about the need for a plausable 'opposition' party to make the real power of the Village look good.

I might also point out that No. 6 wore his badge for all of 5 seconds of the first episode... ;)
