Everyone's heard about Rhea County, I suspect. And a lot of you have responded, deeply offended.

Me? I think this is a great idea.

They want to outlaw homosexuality?
They want to celebrate the Scopes Trial?

I say, let them.

Let them outlaw homosexuality, mixed marriages, the teaching of evolution, and anything else they please.

When Rhea County has a population explosion of people who move there because of all that "moral legislation", we can slap a fence around it and declare it the Backwards Primitive Asshole Reservation. All the fundamentalists, homophobes, and creationists can live there while the rest of us Just Get On With It.

It'll take a long fence to close in Alabama and Mississippi.

I say get stupidity classed as a level 4 terminal disease so we can call it a quarantine of the county.

Does make me wonder if they can charge gays with crimes against nature, can we charge them with crimes against humanity?

Dire Rhea

Um. No content here. I just wanted to use that as a subject line.

Funny, I've had exactly the same thought frequently about an area where I used to live; separate 'em off into a little self-righteous militant unit of ass-clenchers, and let 'em wipe each other out in whatever moral flaws they started seeing in each other when there wasn't anyone else around to demonize.

Agreeing in theory, but being contrary here.

While I suspect that what you propose would indeed make everyone happier in the short term, you probably wouldn't feel that way if you lived there.

Lemme turn it around: Canada has national health care, three provinces now permanently allowing gay marriages, and no George W Bush. We may -have- to move there some day if things go too much further downhill, but in the meantime, how do you react to conservatives who say "If you don't like the U.S., go leave and the rest of us can Just Get On With It"?

Y'know that may be a good idea.

I'll be a bit contrary to one previous suggestion. If a bunch of like-minded folks move to this one place they concentrate and could potentially help reduce their political clout. They get one or two seats, rather than acting to swing 9-10 others as an example.

If it were moving out of the country then the country could swing farther one way if too many people left.

Biggest advantage: Someplace where conservative christians could go to stop feeling "persecuted" (a condition which seems to occur when society doesn't agree with them) :)

Hmm...

If these bozos wanted to found their own nation, I'd have no problem with them KEEPING people out. Of course, I'd have no problem with requiring them to supply their own water, power, military protection, and other benefits one gets by being part of /this/ nation.

But this isn't about a people finding an unused plot of land to start a new life for themselves, free from the presence of undesirable influences. This is about ejecting others who are already established in the area.

I have had several neighbors over the years that I really didn't care for. There were many that I couldn't WAIT to get away from. But never did it once cross my mind to demand that THEY relocate. The issues were mine, not theirs.

When your neighbor offends you, you find a way to live with it. Or you move. That's right. YOU move. You're the one with the problem, you're the one that objects. YOU move. Bury your head in the sand, if you have to.

Then take DEEP BREATHS.

I didn't use the word "reservation" casually.

If they neighbour offend thee, cut them off.

Water, gas, electricity, they'll soon get the message.

Okay, NOW you're just giving me evil ideas.

Would they set up the Golden Bennett casino on reservation land?

Would tribal church leaders be able to vote you out if you were shown to be less than 25 percent Christian?

I dunno -- I have seriously mixed feelings about that. Making fun of people, calling them dumb, and flustering certain people because you know more about how their own religion works than they do is fun, but this is a bit more than that. However, if they take the first steps towards segregating themselves, why not? I always am hearing about the persecution of godly peoples. I think this would really give them something to complain about.

Hmmmmm....

correct me if I'm wrong (not a Yank, myself) But wasn't that JUST the sort of thing that your Pilgrim Fathers (and Mother's, I guess) DID ?? Moved from "Sinfull" Old Mother England to where they could practice their own narrow minded way of life ? Sounds like it's starting all over again..'cept this time there's nowhere for Fundamentalist's to migrate TO, so they want everyone ELSE moved OUT ? :(

Welll, ummm, I'm Canadian. We just asked nicely if we could found a new country. :)

Though an intersting point. I'm not sure if it was that they were persecuted and moved (that's what I heard).

I'm sure talking to some conservative Christians they would say that it is happening again, but I think they need to realize that not having the secular country run as they want doesn't constitute persecution. Now if they were being rounded up, beat in the street they'd have a case, but that's not happening. To the contrary, every presidential candidate makes a point of noting their religion.
