A few days ago, SF writer David Brin published a marvelous rant about The Lord of the Rings on his own site and, in an abridged form, at Salon.com.

I kept flashing back to it while reading Mr. Cranky's review of The Two Towers.

I had planned to make some observations about it, but between rafferty's critique and Mr. Cranky, there's just not a lot left to say.
