At this moment, as I type this, I am watching C-SPAN as Representative Dennis Kucinich (D-Ohio) is filing 35 Articles of Impeachment against President George W. Bush.

Thank the gods.

It is 17:35 PDT, 20:35 EDT. He is on article 9 or 10 of 35.

Turn on C-SPAN now.

Call your representative NOW and urge them to vote in support!

My e-mail to our representative, Mike Honda:

Rep. Honda:

As I write this, Ohio Rep. Dennis Kucinich is presenting 35 Articles of Impeachment against President George W. Bush to the United States Congress.

Mr. Honda, my wife and I cannot urge you strongly enough to vote in favor of these articles. We have endured the flagrant and high-handed disregard for law exhibited by the current occupant of the White House for long enough.

Thank you.

Even if it's too little too late, at least it'll be on record. I'm just not holding out a lot of hope that it'll go anywhere.

Call and email your congresscritter, and let them know where you stand. IF they know they have support -- if they know that it's not just polls, but people motivated enough to call and write -- that WILL influence their votes.

Especially with a Congressional election right around the corner.

I'm having a hard time tracking down other news sources for this.

What the heck? Why is this NOT the top breaking news on the major news outlets?

Because it came out of NOWHERE. Honda's local Campbell ofice had NO IDEA this was going on until I called them. I advised them if they had a TV in the office, to turn on C-SPAN, and they said they did and would.

Done. Though my Rep. (Tom Davis) is not running for reelection and is a through and through republican, so I doubt he will support this.

Only downside is by the time proceedings would complete he'd already be out of office.

My e-mail to our Congressman:

Mr. Boren: I had the great honor to attend an honors political science course taught by your father, David Boren, president of my alma mater. I considered it a privilege to from someone with so many years experience fighting for the interests of my home state. Mr. Boren, I contact you this evening because you are in a position to serve not only the interests of Oklahoma but of the nation as a whole. As I write this, Representative Kucinich from Ohio is reading thirty-five articles of impeachment against President George W. Bush. Mr. Boren, my wife and I urge you, in the strongest possible terms, to vote in favor of these articles. President Bush has, for too many years, violated the Constitution he pledged to preserve, protect and defend from all enemies, both foreign and domestic. He has betrayed the trust of the American people, and he has sullied the reputation of this country. I was born in the year 1976, three months before our nation's bicentennial -- three months before the two hundred year anniversary of the renunciation of King George III. I ask you now to help me, and to help this nation, renounce George IV.

As I said in the letter I just fired off to Rep. Frank Pallone (D-NJ):

It's not too late to do this. Even if it takes too long to prevent the crimes yet to be committed in Bush's final year of office, this White House's disregard for federal law and the lives of thousands must be punished, for history and for the future of our country's government.

Nicely worded.

What I'd love is to see such proceedings lead to having the entire current administration brought to trial for war crimes. Our country's own personal Nuremberg.

The response, alas, was disappointing. I've grown not to expect much from Democrats, and even less from Oklahoma Congressmen, but I was expecting more than this:

"Though I do not always agree with President Bush...I do believe it would be unwise for Congress to make hasty accusations...before all the facts have been examined."

I find especially distasteful the final line:
"But impeachment should not be used as a political tool."

What a shame. I've only been in his district for a week and a half, and already, he's lost my vote.

Meh.

Sure, going after Clinton for what he did wasn't using Impeachment as a political tool, but going after Bush for all he's done is? Words fail me.

Like Hitchkitty below, the response from Tom "I'm getting out while the getting's good" Davis was more than disappointing. I am not sorry to see him retire this year.

See, though, here's the thing. Impeachment is a political tool. More than that, it's a political weapon.

Sure, it shouldn't be used lightly. No weapon should. But there comes a time when its use is not only warranted but necessary.

I'm sure what Mr. Boren meant was that immpeachment should not be used as a partisan tool, and no, it shouldn't. But we can blame the Right for making "political" and "partisan" synonymous -- like "liberal" and "filthy, baby-eating, commie spawn of Hell".

I'll go out on a limb and predict that "I was just following orders" will be the defense offered by, oh, 80% of those investigated.
