So, last night, [livejournal.com profile] quelonzia and I watched The Descent, an excellent, perfectly-paced, extremely tense and scary movie. It takes place in a nearly-lightless cave, and is filmed accordingly.

It's about a group of women who go spelunking. They take a wrong turn... there's a cave-in... one of them gets hurt... and just as you're all tensed up from this gripping, claustrophobic survival tale pitting human against nature...

THE HORROR MOVIE STARTS.

It left us both impressed. This is quite possibly one of the most effective horror movies we've ever seen. Almost an hour later, we were still rattled. Maybe we should have watched that one earlier in the night, instead of Right. Before. Bed.

We were both pretty amused at how much the movie had thrown us.

AND THEN THE POWER WENT OUT ON OUR SIDE OF THE STREET, LEAVING US IN PITCH DARKNESS.

Coyote Loves Us.

I'm sorry, that just made me laugh.

Coyote does indeed have his eye on you.

The Descent is one of my favorite horror movies ever. I think the first half is probably better than the second half, but on the whole, I agree that it's very effect.

I've heard that, despite some supremely gory scenes, Descent relied more on Hitchcock-style horror -- and was creepier then all the recent torture-porn horror movies put together.

Still, it's the sort of movie that I wouldn't see on a bet, except with a fairly large group of people. In daylight.

That's an accurate assessment. I was thinking "Hitchcockian" through much of the first half (through the second half, I was mostly think "OH JESUS EFFING CHRIST").

There is gore, but no gratuitous gore. They make good use of the darkness. Instead of the usual feeling that they're playing up the shadows so you never get a good look at the cheesy monster costumes, the darkness is a necessary part of the cavern environment. Most cave movies cheat, and have nice, clear, brightly-lit caverns, but in The Descent it's an essential part of the realistic, claustrophobic environment.

Did you have any doubts? :D That is just too perfect. But then, Coyote is not just Lord of Practical Jokes. He has a large dose of Perfect Timing, too. All great comedians do.
