Those of us who have expressed some degree of happiness at the outcomes of yesterday's elections have been accused of "gloating".

This is not gloating.

This is the same delighted relief one feels when the smoking, overtaxed brakes finally bring the bus to a stop while only the front wheels have rolled over the edge of the cliff.

Of course in The Italian Job it was the rear wheels that swung round....

But buses have their entrances/exits up front now, don't they?

At last a change of viewpoint where it can have an effect!

Good luck to youse!

I have seen unabashed, admitted gloating on my flist.

and this from the same people who have been glorying in their ability to push ANYTHING down the opposition's throat, by executive fiat if nothing else.

First rule of politics. Anything I do to you is OK, anything you do to me is reprehensible-- even if it's exactly the same thing.

If you have to stop and say you're not the one gloating, you probably aren't the one folks are talking about. Those rude enough to go all 'in yer face, repubs!' don't have the personality type that lets them figure out they did something wrong in the first place. :)

I've seen a few going over the top, but not a lot. My own post on the subject was mostly due to my frustration with a other-side-of-the-fence friend of mine being a bit do-as-I-say-not-as-I-do at me.

Let the Democrats do something to ease us back out of the morass that unchallenged one party--- nay, one MAN-- rule has gotten us into. Then and only then will I gloat.

All I'll say is:

The day after the 2004 presidential election, I had no trouble at all finding genuine, sarcastic, "good old boy" redneck gloating directed at "'dem pussy libural faggots" oozing out of the woodworks.

Truth is, people will always gloat on either side of everything.

Truth also is, when "the other side" won last time, quite a few of them betrayed their real thoughts, real opinions, and real attitude about the "proper place" for all the un-American pussies who should move to Canada.

I actually think real gloating is generally distasteful*, but I'll take the liberal gloating over the conservative brand.

*regarding Lord Vad-- uh, Rumsfield, knock yourself out kids.

Yeah, they wouldn't want to move to Canada. Its so nasty here with the funded health care, sustainable tax cuts, and economic surpluses. We just have NO clue how to run a country here. :)

Of course you ARE required to gay marry someone... *giggles*

If you want to see gloating, we'd have to go back to the day after the 2004 elections, wouldn't we?

While I will be the first to caution against gloating, I think some exuberance is in order considering the number of people and times that Democratic support was labeled as either support for terrorism or straight up treason.

How long that daring to voice any criticism of the war would hurt the troops (like some politician at home has more impact than what's happening on the ground)? A wonderful bit of political correctness from folks that claim to hate that stuff.

I think that's where some of the emotion is coming from. A vindication that both of these points are total bull, and people know it. And for me, the hope that these memes have been dealt critical blows.

As a person who is neither a Democrat nor a Republican, occupying as I do some weird political space that is so far to the left that Gandhi seems a moderate to me, uh, there has definitely been some fist pumping, in your face gloating, hehe.

I, myself, consider this to be perfectly justified. While I am not a Democrat, it's pretty obvious that this election has been a referendum on Bush's administration, and even from my rarefied position it was great to see that hypocritical frat boy get it in the teeth. ;) So, hey, Democrats, gloat away!

For what it is worth, I think that the Democrats need to do more gloating. Or, to view it differently, show deep passion about their victories. I think much of the problem of the Democratic Party has been it's, well, passionlessness. A fair number of Democrats have, of course, been passionately committed to their work, but they have often also come off as extremely prudish people incapable of connecting with a lot of Americans on a visceral level. I think the Democratic Party could USE a little good ol' fashioned gloating, hehe.

You know what? I was going to post something here about not gloating, etc, but screw it. After sitting there at the point of tears in 2004 as Kerry conceded defeat the next morning, surrounded by firemen who were all gloating very heavily about the fact that the 'damn liberals' were squashed, I think we deserve a bit of gloating.

It's about damn time that someone other than Republicans were allowed to have backbones, and show feeling about things. When a Republican shows strong feeling, it's commitment - when a Dem does it (see Howard Dean), they want to commit him.

So in the end, I say gloat. We have lots to gloat about - the republicans no longer have control of either the house OR the senate. Sure, there's some difficulties here, and in the end, the road is long - lots and lots to do. But for a few days, let's all sit back and allow ourselves a bit of enjoyment that the rednecks have lost one, for once.

You're right, this isn't gloating. This is gloating.

I won't try to argue that it was a morally or tactically good thing to do. But after this long, I couldn't hold back.

My delighted relief comes from the fact that I no longer have my TV shows plagued with bitchy, irritating "DON'T VOTE FOR THIS GUY!" political ads. That, and I'm really tired of the right vs. left dick-waving. I never vote "all Republican" nor "all Democrat"... I vote for who I feel is fit for the job.

I hated it when the government was mostly controlled by the Republicans... but it pisses me off just as much to see it the other way as well. We need balance, not just the majority of one side. ¬_¬

I'm just sick of politics in general. :P
