I am a free Prince, and I have as much Authority to make War on the whole World, as he who has a hundred Sail of Ships at Sea, and an Army of 100,000 Men in the Field; and this my Conscience tells me:
They villify us, the Scoundrels do, when there is only this Difference -- they rob the Poor under the Cover of Law, forsooth, and we plunder the Rich under the Protection of our own Courage.

That is a wonderful quote. I'm going to paraphrase it and have Captain Sal say it in my book. Of course, the priestess will then point out that the sailors he takes as slaves are not exactly rolling in the dough.

If you'll check the link, you'll find that a lot of historical pirates had no great love for the slave trade -- in fact, many of them WERE freed slaves.

Arrr!

That doesn't surprise me, really, but my main character DID engage in the slave trade until the priestess guilted him into stopping. The other main character, the owner of the ship (he's more a privateer than a pirate) has a family fortune based entirely on the slave trade. It's a major theme.

And he was never a slave, either. In fact, he was never a career pirate for that matter.
