You'd think I of all dragons would remember a holiday like "Fat Tuesday", but once again, it slipped my mind for a full week.

So here it is, a week into Lent, and, once again, I have a deadline, and need to eliminate as many distractions as possible until it's met.

Thus, as I did in 2003 and 2004, I am Giving Up MUCKS For Lent. While the deadline is almost a full month before Easter, I'll have no trouble finding projects to devote the extra time and focus upon.

Again, I'll probably poke my snout in once a week or so, and after the deadline passes, I may take the Ramadan approach and allow myself moderate use in the evenings and on weekends. Maybe I'll start taking part in the Artist's Ambush again -- it seems like that's the only 30 minutes a week I can really goad myself into drawing.

Folks who normally interact with me on the MUCK can contact me via ICQ -- and, of course, I'll still be checking LiveJournal and e-mail and so forth.

And if you were wondering -- no, I'm not Catholic, nor any other sect or creed that officially observes Lent. I'm just continuing the long ecumenical tradition of appropriating other people's holidays for my own purposes.

Brownie points to those who can identify the source of the subject line. Nobody even hazarded a guess last year.

In that case, you're a better Christian than I. I'm doing absolutely nothing for lent this year.

Think my principal will let me give up report card writing?

Google says the subject line is the punch line to a joke.

A blonde just got married and decided to fuck the brains out of her new husband on their first night together. She put on her sexiest negligee, crawled into bed with him, and snuggled up. But nothing happened. "What's wrong?" she asked. "I can't have sex...it's Lent." he said, to which she replied "Lent? To whom and for how long?"

You're better off. I hardly get online as it is and I still feel like I could cut that out because I need to do work. It's a lack of willpower, though...I can't resist the addiction. Rawr.

Blargh. Ah well, at least it's something you're setting for yourself. I'll hopefully catch you on ICQ during the time off, friend. Take care.

Bingo!

(when I tell the joke, I usually elaborate a little, by specifying that she's Catholic and he's Protestant, and that they went to New Orleans to celebrate their honeymoon at Mardis Gras. But that's my own personal embellishment.)

I hardly use mucks as it is. ^^() Nobody is ever there to talk with. I mainly stick to MSN in the morning, and AIM at night where time allows.

Good on ye. I'm more or less having to give up MUCKs during tax season as it is, so my official Lent schtick this year is to give up Sonic. Went through my receipts on Ash Wednesday and saw how much I spend there in a week -- the Sonic just down the street from my tutoring gig is too damned convenient.

Whine.

The closest Sonic is about an hour and a half away from us. They're scarce out here.

It's actually the midway point between our place and where my grandson lives with his father, so it's become the Convenient Halfway Drop-Off Point so nobody has to make the full three-hour-each-way drive. I have yet to join one of these excursions, though, since it would entail spending an hour and a half in a car with a six-year-old who has ADD.

So far, my craving for a burger and the Best Damned Fountain Menu Anywhere has not yet made that a reasonable trade-off.

Now we're into the spirit of the thing! Can I give up marking math tests? Please?

*shudder* An hour and a half in a small, enclosed space with an ADD child? I understand why you don't make the trip.

Let me clarify what it would actually entail: a small, enclosed space with an ADD child and an adult with anger-management issues.

I love my grandson dearly. Which is why I wouldn't expose HIM to ME in such circumstances.
