After suffering through various software "upgrades" that wind up removing functionality, decreasing stability, or just pointlessly bloating a program without making much difference beyond slowing it down, I have in the last couple of weeks installed new versions of two different applications that have really improved functionality, stability, and interface.

Adobe Acrobat Reader 7.0 is a quantum leap over the slow, twitchy, takes-forever-to-do-anything 6.0. It loads so quickly that you can open a PDF in a browser window, and it doesn't take substantially longer to come on-screen than an HTML page would. This is a vast improvement. I now routineley just open PDFs online, whereas once I would insist on downloading them first, and swearing a blue streak if I accidentally just clicked a link to one. It also interfaces with Firefox much more smoothly.

AVG Anti-Virus 7.0 is also a great improvement over the previous version. Before, if it caught a particularly virus coming into my mailbox, I'd have to shut down Pegasus Mail and do a custom scan on the mail directory, then clear out the Virus Vault. Now, it's transparent. After installing it, I noted that I hadn't had any "hits" in a while. I opened up the control panel, and the Virus Vault had ten of the little bastards sitting there under lock and key. All I had to do was hit a button to flush'em. No interruptions in my mail, or anything.

So... as Apple reserves the right to remove functionality from your iTunes at any time, and as Windows Media Player gets crappier and crappier with every iteration, it's nice to know that there are some software companies that, now and then, actually understand the meaning of the word "upgrade".

I know I too am happy with the new AVG. Works quite nicely. :)

I'm not sure which version of Adobe Acrobat I have, (though it asks if I wish to update to 6.0 each time I open a pdf in it) but it seems to load pdf files exceptionally fast while still online, although there is some slowdown from time to time.

Well, seeing as how I just checked, it would appear to be 6.0! It asks if we can upgrade to some other 6-point version. Ah well.

Oh, man, I just upgraded to Acrobat 7.0 after your post, and HALLELUJAH. It drove me crazy how long it took to do do anything on 6.0. I even stopped using the search because it took five seconds for it to open up that side panel after I hit Ctrl-F. I'd avoid browsing to PDF files just because it would make Firefox completely halt while Acrobat got its shit together. I got into the habit of saving them to the desktop and launching Acrobat separately, so at least I could use my other browser windows while it loaded.

Nice to see a company improving its product instead of just bloating it pointlessly. Thanks for the heads-up.
