Not just the War of the Worlds movie, or any of the classic illustrations. I believe there is a direct lift of dialog from the 1939 War of the Worlds radio broadcast that Orson Welles used to scare the bejesus out of the whole country. To go into detail would be a spoiler, but when you see somebody in a phone booth, listen to what that person says.

If so, it's lost on me since I don't know what that ship was. It's just that when the cinematographers go to so much trouble to lovingly scan past the name of a ship painted on its side, it must have SOME significance for them.

I'm with you, Athelind, this is a great picture. On the DVD's to buy list, to be sure.

Confirmed that the Venture is from King Kong, and note huge cage on its deck....

As noted in one of my posts before, note that the British aviators wear the classic Wally Wood space helmet...

The 30's style montages and graphics are wonderful...

And check out the novel. They embellish the Flying Legion a bit and suggest a few things about their previous exploits... apparently, Manhattan gets attacked all the time, in this world. :)

Yep, I saw it too. Definatly the big G....

Also the radio tower during the news montage was a lift from the old RKO logo.

I saw two direct lifts from Star Wars.

I /really/ wonder is all of these 'lifts and/or tribs' were the directors idea, or if some of them were just put in by the FX crews.

The only big question I have now is, does this director have anything left? Is he going to be a 'one hit wonder', or can he do other projects?

The director IS the SFX crew. This movie didn't have a few "lifts and tributes" here and there. It was a whole, conscious recreation of period and era.

And as for his next project...

A Princess of Mars.
