Hivejournal: Food Will All Kill Me Dead.

What the frak CAN you eat anymore? Meat's bad for you. "Carbs" are bad for you. There we go, that's pretty much every frakkin' organic molecule.

Never has "Tapping The Hive Mind" been more appropriate.

I like tea.

I like honey in my tea.

Honey is too damned sticky and messy to deal with at work.

Is there, like, crystallized honey out there? In nice little packets, like sugar?

Peanut butter and brown sugar, with margarine, on whole wheat bread.

Comfort food with Depression-era roots.

Hell yes, I make it myself.

I use almond butter these days, to keep my "good cholesterol" levels up, but the REAL version uses Jif, dammit.

Good Idea: putting club soda in a smoothie.

Bad Idea: putting spring mix in a smoothie.

Understanding Athelind's Argot: "The Scottish Restaurant"/"That Scottish Place"

H.G. Wells: This is delicious, far superior to that Scottish place I breakfasted.
Amy Robbins: Scottish?
H.G. Wells: MacDougall's.

Myth: BUSTED!

Last night, Your Obedient Serpent and his family had yummy, yummy BLTs for dinner.

During the night, this combined alchemically in my stomach with my acid reflux.

I am now having Bacon Reflux. This was my alarm clock, awakening me after five hours of sleep.

Bacon does not make everything better.

Oorlp.

Random Bay Area Notes

Note the First: Last week, all the weather sites were reporting that we'd get a single day of rain on Friday.

The rain started Thursday night. Since then, every weather site has been insisting that the rain will clear up "tomorrow". That one day of rain has almost turned into a week now.

It's not serious rain, or even significant rain -- just intermittent spitting and sprinkling, with only occasional, passing moments where it's worth your while to turn on the windshield wipers.

Its stubborn persistence is amusing, though.

Note the Second: Safeway has surprisingly good store brands.

Their pasta sauces are excellent (especially their Arrabiata sauce). Their frozen entrees are decent.

Their sodas, however, are good enough to warrant a journal entry. Almost any supermarket will slap their store label on adequate orange or black cherry soda. Safeway's "fruit" sodas are really quite good. Their Root Beer and Cream Soda (both sold as "Parker's") are excellent, the equal of most anything in a can.

They even manage a good store-brand cola.

I've never found a drinkable bargain-brand cola before. Cola is the hardest flavor to master -- hell, Coca-Cola hasn't managed to get it right since the mid-'80s -- but even my beloved [livejournal.com profile] quelonzia, a cola connoisseur, is replacing her RC addiction with Safeway's "Go2" Cherry Cola.

Of course, this discovery occurred as I was phasing sodas out of my diet again. One can a day isn't a lot, but it's more than I usually drink.

As with anything flavor-oriented, Your Mileage May Vary.

Food: 50 States, 50 Burgers.

Food Network has posted an article about the "one burger you absolutely have to try in every state."

Most of the states have burgers from this classy little bistros, or that hole-in-the-wall diner, or some other one-of-a-kind location.

California? A Double-Double from In-N-Out Burger.

They aren't wrong, mind you.

...I may have one for lunch.

Lent Update, Day 2

So, here we are on Day 2 of No Beef/No Dairy/No Fried Foods Lent.

Yesterday, I brunched at Jamba Juice, and for dinner, I served up a Grilled Chicken Caesar Salad with Jalapeno Cheese Bread on the side (that counts as "incidental" cheese).

I started this morning with a few heaping tablespoons of BeneFiber in a 24-oz glass of water, then hit Starbuck's with [livejournal.com profile] quelonzia for a soymilk latte and an apple bran muffin.

Let's just say that my system is now in the process of getting rid of all the rotten stuff I've been overindulging in for the last few weeks. Despite the Sudden Activity, I feel surprisingly good.

I'm also adding "No Soda" to the Lent List.
