Honestly, having listened to a lot of what were already considered "oldies" on dad's mid-'60s A.M. radio while I was growing up... a smartphone speaker is definitely not an improvement. Maybe it depends on what model radio one is comparing the phone to. And what phone for that matter.

Then again, the masters weren't as good in those days so maybe the playback device was less critical.
